M: It’s been three years since we last spoke. Things have happened since then.
MD: Just slightly. Things are going real well now, though.
M: Rumor has it that every place you’re appearing on this new tour, you’re packing ‘em in. Do you think a lot of it is just curiosity, to see what you look like after a year’s…er, absence?
MD: I really do. People want to see what everyone’s been talking about. They want to see if there’s anything “wrong” with me.
M: They must be pretty pissed off when they see you looking like you do.
MD: I hate to make people mad, but I am looking good.
M: Being where you were, how did you manage to keep yourself in shape?
MD: It wasn’t very easy at all when I was on my little “vacation,” as I like to call it. The food was not body-builder’s food, and there wasn’t much working out you could do. Fortunately, I didn’t lose much size, but as soon as I got out, I started spending 99% of my time in the gym. I’ve been working harder than ever and, in my opinion, my body is, right now, looking better than ever. Of course, that’s just my opinion.
M: Well, after your first appearance, if that wasn’t the case, word would have spread pretty quickly.
Your “vacation” was, what, just about a year..?
MD: It was 383 days, 4 hours and 15 minutes. Not that I was keeping track.
M: Did they know who you were?
MD: There were plenty of guards who knew my situation, what I did for a living. The mailroom could have been a good source of that. I got so many letters, it was ridiculous, from every country in the world. It not only made me feel good, it gave me something to do every day.
M: Did your “fame” present any problems?
MD: As I said, there were guards who knew, and there were problems a couple of times. But I had a high-ranking guard…I’m not sure if he was a “fan,” he was definitely on my side. He told me that if anyone bothered me to let him know. He knew what I did, the magazines, the videos. He got me out of a couple of tight spots.
M: So your spirits were OK?
MD: I had my family come visit me every week. You could only have one visit per week. They drove the six-hour round trip every weekend for the 54 weeks I was locked up.
M: Are you going to pick up your career where you left off?
MD: Actually, I think my career is even further ahead than when I went in. The bookings are really coming in. I couldn’t ask for anyone better than David Forest as my booking agent.
M: The tour is being billed as the “Super Soaked” tour, named after the Falcon movie you made over a year ago. Have you got any new movie projects?
MD: I’m going to be doing a new solo film for MuscleGods. I did one for them a few years ago called “The Model,” and I think that’s the best movie I’ve ever shot. I’m excited to be working with them again.
M: Anything other than “solo” stuff? This is one of the questions I asked three years ago.
MD: I won’t say that I would never do one, it’s just that, at this time in my life, I’m going to stick to this. It’s not something I’m saying “No” to, it’s just not for me at this point.
M: If a major studio came along and offered you big bucks, would you still say no?
MD: Money’s not everything.
M: Also, three years ago, you were talking about starting your own film company.
MD: I’d gotten burned so many times by people I’d worked for, I decided I wanted to do everything myself. Now, I’m starting to trust people a little more.
M: Boston is looking forward to seeing you. Anything special you’ve got planned?
MD: I don’t want to brag…
M: Oh, go ahead.
MD: The shows are pretty hot. I haven’t had any complaints. I’m really charismatic on stage. Sometimes, muscle guys are kind of stiff on stage, and they don’t have much rhythm. I’m a little different that way. I like a lot of audience interaction. I’m really looking forward to it myself.
